Be sure understanding is complete before corrections are added.

34. SOLID SPIDNX DOWN - BUT READY FOR RECALL.

Chapter 9

Dynamic Down

Dogs are not people dressed up in far coats,

and to deny tliem tlieir nature is to do them great harm.

– Jeanne Schinto

Goal: To produce a fast, reliable down on command, done all in one motion without moving forward.

Down Position

A correct down is done in one motion, with the dog rocking back (not forward) until his elbows are firmly on the ground. We strive for a down with the haunches upright and the dog’s feet underneath him, called the Sphinx position (Fig. 34), rather than rolled over onto one hip.

Many dogs stop first and then lie down. Others sit first, and then lie down. Both techniques result in slow downs.

Dogs often do not like the down position because it is submissive. It makes them feel vulnerable. For these reasons, the motivational down is much quicker and more reliable than a down taught with correction, through dominance.

Your dog has no problem lying down in front of you to gnaw on a bone. You can use similar attraction to make Champ willing, even eager, to lie down on command.

Your tone of voice for the Down command is important. It must be very different from you Sit command.

Use a deeper, more authoritative tone of voice. Make your Down command serious, but not threatening.
